Qing Zuo

Yang Cheng is the founder of Qing Zuo Studio in Jingdezhen. Since establishing the studio in 2010, he has devoted his practice almost entirely incense burners.

His practice is rooted in the study of historical Chinese incense burners and the culture that surrounded them. New burners often begin with an old form, but rarely end as a reproduction. Historical references are reconsidered through his own understanding of clay, firing, proportion, and use, which allows traditional forms to find a place within contemporary life. To date, Qing Zuo has developed more than 300 incense-burner designs inspired by notable forms throughout Chinese history.
