Blue "Sa Lan" Orchid Gaiwan
$230.00Artist Fu Shan Xu combines multiple techniques in these brilliant new gaiwans.
First, the blue glaze is applied with Sa Lan, "Splashed Blue", a very popular technique from the Qing Dynasty of splattering cobalt pigment to create flowing, dynamic pattern.
Second, they then use seal carving techniques to physically carve out the calligraphy and the orchid on the lid and glaze those sections with white so they are distinct. Even though the final surface is smooth, you can just barely feel the subtle distinction as you rub your fingers on the gaiwan.
Finally, they add a silver rim and oxidize it just enough to turn it slightly purple-blue to better match the beautiful blue glaze.
