Piqiuhua Famille Rose Incense Burner

Inspired by an imperial incense burner form from the Chenghua period of the Ming dynasty, this piece pairs a stately tripod silhouette with an unusually delicate and layered surface.

The ceramic body is covered in a warm golden ground, beneath which fine scrolling foliage appears almost like a shadow. Across it, Piqiuhua—round floral medallions in varying sizes and patterns—are painted in soft famille-rose enamels. Scattered with an almost effortless rhythm, the blossoms seem to float across the gold, bringing touches of pink, pale blue, yellow, and coral to the richly patterned surface.

Two upright handles and three gently flared feet give the rounded body a balanced, architectural presence. Above, a hand-carved Ziguangtan wood lid with openwork ruyi motifs brings a deep, quiet contrast to the luminous porcelain, finished with a warm reddish Shoushan Furong stone finial.

Ornate at first glance, yet remarkably restrained in its palette and proportion, it is a piece that reveals more detail the closer you look.
